Dreaming Big

Me: what do you want to be when you grow up?

Olivia, on her first day of Pre-K:  well I will probably get a job but they will fire me so I guess I will just have to find a new one.

Nutrisystem Week 14: Weight Loss Problems

I'm currently going back in time one month to tell you about this week of Nutrisystem.  The self inflicted busy is just out of control, I swear!  And I am tired of my own excuses for not blogging.  So hello!  I'm in the middle of a lifestyle change, how are you?!

When I started Nutrisystem in February, I felt so horribly bad about myself.  I had 20+ pounds to lose, no energy to exercise, and was full of excuses why it was too hard to lose weight. Because honestly, I've never in my life been overweight.  My weight struggles consisted of losing 3-5 pounds which were probably period weight anyway.  This 20 pounds felt like a million and it just seemed too hard.  Two years of eating my emotions made me a totally different person - I didn't know how to get out of the rut.

My BMI was bumping up against OBESE and so I figured, what the hell.  May as well try Nutrisystem.  I wasn't at all thinking of changing my eating totally - I was thinking of losing some weight with an easy diet.  And like most "diets," I lost pretty quickly at first.  Which was an awesome confidence builder.  Like, hey.  I can maybe do this thing!

Lighter 18 pounds, I started back to work full time the first week in May.  When I started interviewing for jobs in February, I bought size 14 pants.  And they were tight.  I returned to work wearing size 8 pants that are on the verge of being loose.  My underwear almost fell off as I was walking across the cafeteria one day.  I seriously told the other girl who was training with me that she was in charge of giving me a heads up if she saw my underwear around my ankles.  (Way professional.  Always.)

Lost the baby weight in my ring finger.
Married again for the first time since July 2010.

Another kick ass week on Nutrisystem.  My workouts are super hard and last an hour, and I love them.  I'm eating so many healthy foods as snacks.  I'm making excellent decisions when I eat outside of the Success plan.  I'm used to smaller portions and more frequent meals and am never hungry.

I'm happy and sad that my time with Nutrisystem is coming to a close.  I'd like to continue but blogging is just too much of a commitment for me right now.  I have two more posts to do and my program will be complete.  I've gotten a few grumbles about missing my old blog (I do too - I used to be very funny!) but I've gotten way more emails with questions and updates of readers who are starting out on Nutrisystem because of me.   Which is awesome!  I'm getting the food for free in exchange for blogging, but I don't get anything when someone signs up.  I could jump on my blog and tell you that I hate it and it wouldn't change the terms of our agreement.  The truth is, I LOVE NUTRISYSTEM for giving me the tools to shed all these freaking stupid pounds and feel normal again.

Nutrisystem Week 13: Less Chubby, More Sweaty

Week 13 of Nutrisystem was fabulous as always.  My only actual complaint is that I had to go shopping and buy a bunch of new cute clothes to wear to work because all the stuff I've been wearing is too big.  Woe, etc.

Lots of confessions this week.  I didn't drink enough water or eat enough vegetables.  I ate out.  Twice.  I even had a beer.  I exercised like crazy though and I think it made up for it because I still lost another .6 pounds.

I was trying to find a couple of face pictures to compare but sadly, I have no recent pictures of myself.  Or...I should say, I have no normal pictures of myself.  I do have pictures of myself that I text to my friends when I feel like they might be missing me.  Which is always because my company is way pleasurable.

Nutrisystem Week 12: (my) Behind (is smaller-ish)

My week 12 of Nutrisystem actually ended on April 26 and I am so far behind that I am now fondly looking back on the week and telling you about it.  Thankfully I keep good notes in the same place where I track my foods so I'm good to go.  I'm not sure why I'm so behind with things, but everything is good and I'm catching up now.

So.  It was the end of Nutrisystem week 12 and And AND the end of my first month of crazy workouts.  I'm wearing pre-twin clothes and buying new things and actually feeling like a normal human being.

My Progress So Far:

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Week 8: -.4
Month 2 Total: 13.4 pounds lost!
Week 9: -.6
Week 10: -.6
Week 11: -1.4
Week 12: -.8
Total: 16.8 Pounds Lost!

I feel like I've totally mastered Nutrisystem at this point.  Thinking about snack options while shopping just comes natural.  Organizing my shipments of food is so much easier than that first shipment - I have my shelves cleared and everything has a spot.  I know which foods to order because I've tried everything they offer.

One thing that has bothered me a bit is that Olivia has picked up on the fact that I'm not eating what everyone else eats, and that she cannot eat my food.  Because these Nutrisystem foods look as yummy as they are, and they look mighty appealing to a four year old.  Which is fine, but it bothers me that the topic of weight and weight loss and dieting would be on her radar.  I've told her that sometimes mommies need special food to get healthy and strong after having a baby, and she seems ok with that.  But I want to make sure that she grows up to be confident and proud of her body.

I want to make sure she grows up and doesn't pick her nose.  That too.

What has made me so happy is that Olivia loves to watch me exercise, and often jumps in and does the moves with me.  I want her to grow up with the idea that you should work your muscles because it is the good thing to do for your body and health.  NOT to be "skinny" or whatever.  We flex our muscles together and talk about how strong we are.  Obviously Olivia's muscles are bigger but it is probably from all the flexing she does while nose picking...

April 1-April 26: High Intensity Interval Training
Lots more definition in my stomach!  And in my arms.
Best.workouts.ever.

I look back at my weights that I've tracked when I get discouraged.  It helps give me perspective on how far I've come.  I weigh just over 51 pounds less than when I was full-term with Adelle.  I weigh 32 pounds less than what I weighed when the crazy fast post-baby weight loss stopped.  I am only about 10-15 pounds away from my goal.  Nutrisystem has definitely been the kick start of my success and I am always telling people how much I love it.  If you think you might love it too but have questions, please feel free to email me!  I will shoot you straight I swear!

Nutrisystem Week 11: Nut butter. Heh.

Almost at the end of three months of Nutrisystem!  I can't think of new ways to say how much I love Nutrisystem.  It has been the perfect way for me to change my bad habits and actually start losing weight and paying attention to what I am eating.

My Progress So Far:

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Week 8: -.4
Month 2 Total: 13.4 pounds lost!
Week 9: -.6
Week 10: -.6
Week 11: -1.4
Total: 16 Pounds Lost!

This week put me at the weight I was after I lost all of my Olivia baby weight in 2009.  Or, all baby weight lost and just infertility weight remaining.  So I'm getting there!

I'm still enjoying the Nutrisystem foods and am rarely (almost never) tempted to cheat.  I really thought that I tried everything on the menu at this point, but I was really excited to see a new frozen meal in my delivery.  Sweet & Sour chicken - it was so delicious too.

Sweet & Sour Chicken
Get in my belly.
I've been trying to switch up my proteins and I have developed a sick love affair with almond butter.  Like, I love it more than is normal.  I also like to call it nut butter and then laugh like a child.  Nut butter (heh) on my bagel in the morning.  Better than anything I've had for breakfast in a long time!   My only confession is that I've been horrible about eating vegetables this week.  Like, zero veggies most days.  Not.good.  Mostly I just don't have time to get to the store because things are nuts right now or my kids are sick (ear and double eye infection OLIVIA) or I am trying to finish reading Harry Potter because I like doing things about 5 years behind everyone else.   BUT!  I'm killing it with workouts and otherwise my eating and water are right on track.  My shorts are thisclose to fitting and summer is coming.  I'm shopping in the back of my closet and I love it!   If you'd like to join me in using Nutrisystem to lose weight and start a healthier way of eating, follow this link: Join Nutrisystem or call 1-888-853-4689.

Nutrisystem Week 10: Flex!

OH MY GOSH.  The busy just swallowed me up this week and then spit me out.  Just now.  I'm a big slimy spit ball rolling over to my laptop to type this entry an entire week late.  It is shameful.

All of the free time I was using to type freaking cover letters and perfect my resume?  Well, it turns out those soul-sucking tasks finally paid off.  Yesterday, I accepted an offer for a full-time position starting the first week in May.  After I asked the important questions, like, do I have to wear pantyhose?  And,  can I wear peep toe shoes?  I was scrambling around to figure out childcare before I accepted.

My mighty, about to be gainfully employed again, bicep.
And my hairy armpit.  Shaving?  Ain't nobody got time for that.

In addition to having a stellar week employment-wise, I had another stellar Nutrisystem week.  I think I missed my vegetable goal once and my water goal once.  In the past, the stress of interviewing and waiting for a call and negotiating an offer and waiting again?  Would have sent me straight to a pile of nachos and cheese to calm my nerves.  I can tell you with 100% honesty that I wasn't tempted to cheat and did not cheat at all.  Big change for me!

I have been working out like crazy (which is a synonym for the exercise program I'm doing, IfYouKnowWhatIMean) and seeing big changes in my body.  The scale is slowing down but who cares about that, really.  I'm almost half way through this 60 workout and I am feeling so strong.  I probably couldn't kick your ass or anything but I could probably do like 15 moving pushups.  So yay.

Ten weeks of Nutrisystem and I've had a loss every single week.  I think that's is freaking fantastic!

My Progress So Far:
Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Week 8: -.4
Month 2 Total: 13.4 pounds lost!
Week 9: -.6
Week 10: -.6
Total: 14.6 Pounds!
I only have six weeks left in the Nutrisystem Nation Blogging Program  and my goal of losing twenty pounds is looking totally feasible.  I am already trying to plan my transition off of Nutrisystem by making lists of meals and recipes for every meal.

If you have healthy snack ideas, please post them in the comments!  Snacks are difficult for me, as is breakfast.  I'm always accepting suggestions!

Nutrisystem Week 9: This is my life.

Week 9 of Nutrisystem was just as great as the previous 8.  While my weekly losses seem to be slowing a bit, I am noticing big changes in my body from all of the exercise I am getting.  And I'd rather be fit than skinny so I am alright with that!

My Progress So Far:

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Week 8: -.4
Month 2 Total: 13.4 pounds lost!
Week 9: -.6
Total: 14 Pounds!

I really don't even need a success and confession post this week.  I followed the Nutrisystem Women's SUCCESS Select Plan exactly - drank enough water, ate all 4 servings of vegetables daily, ate healthy protein and carb snacks, and blew my exercise requirement out of the water.

At this point, I don't even really have to think about what I'm doing.  I've tried the Nutrisystem foods and know what I like, so creating my monthly menu only takes me a minute.  Shopping for my snacks is easy too, because I have memorized the portions and choices and can pick and choose what I want for the week.

I've been feeling kind of guilty because my blog is All Nutrisystem, All The Time.  I feel like I should be writing other things.  But truthfully, aside from my kids, this weight loss and exercise program is my life.  I get up, play with the kids from 6-9, exercise while Adelle naps and Olivia is at preschool, shower quickly and maybe look presentable (or maybe not).  By that time, Adelle is up and it is playtime again.  During Adelle's second nap, I've been job searching and submitting resumes and cover letters (which, OMG, not.fun.at.all.) or playing just with Olivia or getting dinner ready or...etc.

And not to be all Pity Me/Woe or whatever, but it has been a long time since I took care of myself properly and I am so motivated right now.  Exercise doesn't feel like a chore because I have so much more energy and feel so good when I'm working my ass off (almost literally).  So I guess when it's the choice between an hour workout or having the time to update my blog, the choice is easy.

Speaking of choices, I was just telling someone (Olivia's preschool teacher, actually) about Nutrisystem after she complemented me on my weight loss.  She said she had heard of it but was afraid to try it because of the cost.  And I get that.  It is expensive - I don't think anyone would try to deny that.  Truthfully, I don't know that I would have been willing to pay for it either.

A few weeks ago, I had to cheat and eat lunch out because I forgot my meal bar and was super hungry.  Do you know what I spent at lunch?  For ONE meal?  I spent $12 at lunch, and I had a cup of soup, side salad, and diet pop.  Nutrisystem plans vary in cost but the plan I am on starts at $11/day with plans starting at $8/day.  And you get breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert!  For what I spent for one lunch!

This is where I need to remind you that I don't have to say any of this stuff, I just want to.  The only thing I'm required to say is the disclosure at the bottom.  I get nothing if you sign up.  I just seriously love Nutrisystem so much.  And I've gone from feeling frustrated to feeling motivated and seeing results.  I can assure you, if you follow the plan and make changes, it will be worth every penny!

Good deal at Nutrisystem right now!

I've lost 14 pounds and 2 pant sizes in 9 weeks.  I've adjusted to eating smaller, more frequent meals and healthy snacks throughout the day.  I'm working out 6 days a week and I feel strong.

That's it!  This week I absolutely HAVE TO take measurements again.  It slipped my mind but I think that I will see changes there for sure.

And maybe I will write about something else this week.  Or maybe not.

Nutrisystem Week 8: Being Nice to Myself

I am half way done with my 16 week Nutrisystem program!  I can't believe it has been two months since I started.  It is working so well for me and I am so excited for these next two months.  I have a real shot of getting beyond my goal.  Which seemed quite impossible just a few months ago.

Since this is my halfway point, I took a picture to get a look at my progress.  When I initially snapped the picture I just felt horrible about how it looked and I started to get really down on myself.  And then I went back to my Before pictures.

And then I decided that I am kicking freaking ass and that I need to be nice to myself.  I've come a long way.

I've been going back and forth about posting this picture.  Because a lot of people that I know in real life see this, and I am totally embarrassed about how I look.  It is so much easier for strangers to read about my feeeeelllllinnnngggssss and see my enormous stretch-marked stomach but when I people I know read it?  The.freaking.worst.

But then also, I've done my fair share of searching for before/after fitness pictures that made me feel like I had a shot of looking normal again.  So I'm going to post it.  Here it is:

I'm dying inside just knowing that you are looking at this.

1. Those are the same clothes in both pictures.  They are so much longer because there is less area to cover!

2. I got these results by using the Nutrisystem Women's SUCCESS Select plan for eight weeks and exercising for 30-60 minutes a day, 3-5 days per week.  I even have some teeny weeny arm muscles!

3. I swear that I am not sucking it in or anything at all.

4. My stretch marks are colorless now so yay for that!

5. My phone camera lens is super scratched HOLY HELL.

This week I did cheat again.  I ate Easter dinner at my mom's.  I convinced myself that I would just have 2 ounces of turkey and some vegetables. LOLFOREVER.  I had those but also I ate All Of The Stuffing That Ever Stuffing-ed.  And then I felt horrible afterward and chugged a bunch of water to make up for it.

I did still manage a loss though - another .4 pounds gonzo!

My Progress So Far:

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Week 8: -.4
Halfway Mark Loss Total: 13.4 Pounds!

I took measurements at the beginning but haven't gotten around to doing that again.  I'll do that this week though!

It seems like my legs and my arms have gotten the Be Normal Memo.  My stomach?  Mmmm not so much.  It is by far my biggest challenge - it sticks out and has weird lumps and bumps and is super weak.  I still have no pants that fit right and any that I try on look all crazy on me.  But.  BUT!  I'm trying to be nicer to myself and just keep working because I've come pretty far in two months.

I'm really hoping to exceed my goal by the end of my Nutrisystem Nation Blogger Program, but if I haven't I am seriously going to continue with one of the transition programs.  Dinners on my own, maybe?  I don't know.  I will decide when I get there.  But I really love the program and I am still so grateful to be included.  Thank you thank you thank you Nutrisystem!

This is why I have no time to write blogs.

I took the dogs out for, oh, two minutes? Three, tops. Olivia is at my mom's and I'm home alone with Adelle "destructicon" Knepper.

Oh well. I can maybe blog again in like 17 years...at least she is really cute!

Nutrisystem Week 7: Real Pictures of Food

I had another ridiculously fantastic week on Nutrisystem.  I'm down another 1.4 pounds this week, and my workouts have been kicking ass.  Next week is my halfway point and I'm thinking about posting some beginning and midpoint pictures of myself.  Maybe.  We will see if I am brave enough!

My Progress So Far:
Week 1: -2.4

Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Week 7: -1.4
Total: 13 Pounds lost!

Since I am working out so much - an hour a day, at least five days a week - I have been dipping into my Optional Extras.  On days that I work out, I eat some of the extra foods that are allowed but are optional while on Nutrisystem.   I can have a max of three servings of extras, here are some examples:

  • 1 Cup of Popcorn
  • 1 Cup Sugar Free Gelatin
  • 1 tsp. of Seeds
  • 1 Tbsp of Cream Cheese
So I'll add seeds to my salad, or have a whole grain mini bagel with cream cheese as one of my smart carb choices during the day.  I'm always so much more hungry when I exercise and these extras really help with that.  And obviously it isn't hurting my weight loss at all!

I wanted to post a couple of pictures of the actual food I'm eating so that you can see a non-stock photo.  Do you know the problem?  I am so excited to shove my food into my Nutrisystem Hole (technical term) that I forget every.single.time to snap a quick pic.  I managed to remember once and so here is a picture of the trail mix bar that I had for lunch this week.

Nutrisystem Trail Mix Bar
One of my favorites.

And while I was going to find the Trail Mix Bar picture, I found a picture I took of the totally old school step aerobics video that I've been doing.
I'm pretty sure it is from the mid-90's.
They are all wearing slouch socks and
high tops with velcro.
But it burns 500+ calories so giddy up!
There's  no real point in a success/confession section this week.  The entire week was a success - great workouts, loved all of my meals, no cheats even when I went to 3 parties over the weekend.  I haven't been so close to being my "normal" size for three years, and I definitely didn't feel so hopeful trying to do it on my own.     Basically: Two months in and I still love Nutrisystem and I am still happy to answer any questions that you have!    If you'd like to join me in using Nutrisystem to lose weight and start a healthier way of eating, follow this link: Join Nutrisystem or call 1-888-853-4689.

Nutrisystem Week 6: Cheaty Cheaterson

I'm done with week 6 of Nutrisystem and it is still just more of the same - I freaking LOVE Nutrisystem!  And while I do have a cheat to confess, I must tell you that I kicked ass this week with everything else!

I had lunch planned with a few friends, and Mark gave me the green light to take the entire afternoon to just shop and enjoy some time alone.  I ran out the door so fast - no time to change your mind, you enormous sucker bahahahahahahaha - that I forgot my lunch that I planned to eat in the car on the way to the restaurant.

I was half an hour from home with no time to go back and pick it up.  It was either, make a good choice in food at the restaurant or cut my blissful aloneness in half to go home and eat a Nutrisystem meal.

I love Nutrisystem, but not that much.  I get zero time alone.  I've tried to buy some bathroom alone time by teaching Olivia about privacy, but now she just stands outside the door and asks me if I'm peeing or pooping, and then says something like, "Oh, I just heard you poop!"  So yeah.  I ate at a restaurant.

A noncreamy soup and a side salad, and I took off the croutons and had ranch on the side.  It's almost sad how pleased I am with myself over this.  It makes me hopeful for the transition off of Nutrisystem in a couple of months.  So far, so good:

Week 1: -2.4

Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Week 6: -2.2
Total: 11.6 Pounds lost!

I am hoping to lose around 10 more pounds for sure, and maybe 15.  I haven't been normal and unpregnant in so long that I really need to reevaluate my weight goal.

Someone pointed out to me that I should post actual pictures of the food I am eating instead of pictures from the Website.  And I agree!  I plan to do that after I get my next order, which should be here in a little over a week.  Then I'll snap pics of my favorite foods and put them up so you can see what they look like from the view of my scratched up phone camera.

Confessions:

1. Cheated and ate out.  First time in six weeks, which I think is awesome!  I didn't even really want to but I would've been starving if I hadn't.

2. Didn't get all of my veggie servings a couple of days this week.  Not cool.

Successes:

1. Ate out like a Cheaty Cheaterson and didn't stick my face into a bowl of nachos!

2. Drank at least 64 ounces of water every day.  I've been horrible about this so I'm counting it as a success.

3. Nutrisystem recommends 30 minutes of exercise a day.  While I didn't do that exactly, I did do hour long workouts four days this week.  Which equals out to 30 extra minutes.  I WIN.  Just a this.  I still kind of fail at life.

4. Got a couple of comments about my weight loss from friends and family.  I got a text from a friend saying that my face looked thinner after I posted this picture on Facebook:

Waffles and Chuggington for the girls.
Nutrisystem Pancakes and Cuddles for me.
(Also, there's my gel stained kitchen!  I hope to post a before and after sometime this millennium.)
 5. I wore a pair of my old jeans, single digit-sized, and was able to button them.  Admittedly, they were slightly snug, but 6 weeks ago I couldn't even come close to buttoning them.  And so many more of my old shirts fit nicely.  Such a great feeling!

How do you kick rash? Share for a chance to win!

Fact: I birth babies with rashy butts.

Olivia was the worst for sure because she always had some sort of redness and irritation that I was fighting.  It would get better for a day or two, and then all of a sudden Hello Red Butt Baybee.  But Ainsley was always rashy and now Adelle tries to fit right in too.

I would have sworn to you, over the past four years, that I tried everything to keep from getting diaper rash.  Different brands of diapers.  Keeping her super dry.  Keeping her super clean.  Only using wipes for dirty diapers but not wet diapers.  But still, my babies would end up with diaper rash and a bad attitude no matter what.  Bring on the diaper rash cream!

I'm not sure why it took me until kid #3 to figure out that I should be using diaper rash cream to prevent diaper rash instead of shaking my fists at the heavens and cursing it every time it showed up.  It's like, "AHA!  I am supposed to put this cream on her beefy little bottom all the time instead of just when it looks like it needs it!  Who knew?"

Everyone.  Everyone knew.

Except me, and maybe except you.  But now you know!  It is crazy how you can take care of babies for so long and feel like you actually know what you are doing, what with keeping them alive and fed and everything.  And then all of a sudden you realize that you were missing something very simple and very useful all along.
These butts are rash free!!!

Diaper rash cream.  With every diaper change.  Lucky for Adelle I discovered this revolutionary method in time to save her lots of sore butts and crankiness!

I've tried all different brands, and my very favorite for everyday prevention is Boudreaux's Butt Paste.  It smells good and wipes off easily.  I can't stand creams that are sticky and require lots of wiping to remove.  I don't have that problem at all with Boudreaux's Butt Paste (I use the Original Butt Paste, but there are a couple of other options - All Natural Boudreaux's Butt Paste and Boudreaux's Butt Paste Maximum Strength).  Plus it keeps away the burning heat of the evil Rashadon!

No Rashadon threatening to crush our Butt City!!

No matter what, every parent is going to have to deal with diaper rash at some point and will probably hit the Internet for ideas on how to fight it.  So tell us:

Nutrisystem Week 5: Happily chugging along.

This is the first week on Nutrisystem that I lost less than a pound.  I knew it was coming though so no biggie.  I still lost .4, for a total of 9.4 in five weeks.

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!
Week 5: -.4
Things are still going well.  I am excited to order my next month of food and try some new things.  I also plan to really start exercising again this week.  My freaking back is finally healed up and I'm ready to get moving!

A couple of questions popped up in my last post that I'd like to answer.

So I get that the meals are healthy because the portions are the correct size and seem to be balanced, but are they actually using healthy ingriedients? Are there trans fats present, in say, the chocolate donut?

Yes, the meals are healthy.

There will always be someone out there who has a different definition of what is healthy: Clean.  No Sugar. Paleo.  Vegetarian.  Vegan.  No Carb.  Whatever.  If you are a person who is against eating packaged and processed food, then you are going to object to Nutrisystem.

Take the chocolate donut for example.  All of the Nutrisystem foods are listed on the Website complete with ingredient list and nutrition information (Click Here for the donut information).  When you make your menu choices you can make an informed decision about what you will be eating for the next month.

Chocolate Glazed Donut
My favorite breakfast!

And in answer to your particular example, all Nutrisystem foods have zero trans fats.

What does Mark eat while you do the nutrisystem 'thing'? I have a Mark of my very own (honestly, he even has a birth certificate that says so!) and I just feel like it would be a hassle to make him something and then something different for me. Is it easy for you to both eat at the same time while you do this plan? Thanks!!

Well, I do still menu plan and cook separately for Mark, Olivia, and Adelle.  Sometimes I try to coordinate so that we are eating similar meals (pizza, roast beef, etc.) but most of the time I don't do that.

However, planning and preparing my Nutrisystem meals seriously requires almost zero effort.  I just look at what I have, pick it, and pop it in the microwave.  Doing something separate for me is the same as the regular cooking I was doing because everything Nutrisystem is basically ready to go.

Menu planning is the same as before too, because I still eat the same fruits and vegetables that everyone else eats, so not much has changed there.  Actually, I require more variety than Mark and Olivia - they could have a taco and pizza rotation every night - and so I just pick a few favorite meals to prepare and then serve leftovers too instead of planning 12 meals each week with two nights of leftovers.

Successes:

- I had to buy new pants.  My maternity pants make me look like I am wearing a loaded diaper and fall down as soon as I move around.  My regular pants make me look like a sausage.  Annoying, but I'm counting it as a success because at least things are changing.

(Also, if you have suggestions for jeans, I need them.  I am big in the belly still but my legs and hips are almost normal.)

- Five weeks, parties, and girls nights - NO CHEATING.  Rarely tempted, either.  I have 11 more weeks left and I'm already starting to get sad at the thought of this being done!

Confessions:

- No working out and not enough water for me.  But I should be able to work out soon and I'm determined to drink my freaking water.  For some reason, since I had the twins, I hate drinking water.  I used to drink tons and now it requires so much effort.  Weird!

- My wedding rings still don't fit, and I haven't worn them in two years.  Not really a confession, but more of a goal.  I'd like to wear my pretty rings again!

I've been working on three blog posts that are non diet related and they are taking forever. I swear I will finish at least one this week!  Having two kids is a total time suck...who would have guessed?

Nutrisystem, Week 4: A month already!

I am more behind on blogging than I am at life, but only barely.   I've got too many projects going in addition to the two humans I am in charge of feeding and bathing and generally keeping alive.

It has definitely been nice to not have to worry about my food and my meal planning this week.  And I lost another 1.8 pounds!  I am winning at Nutrisystem even though the rest of my life appears to be questionable.

Week 1: -2.4

Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1
Week 4: -1.8
Month 1 Total: 9 pounds lost!

I did have my first difficult week this week.  Mostly, I think, because my p-e-r-i-o-d is coming and so I want to Eat All The Things.  I had one actual day where I thought all day about cheating because I really wanted something snacky.  Not my unlimited veggies.  Something delicious and horrible.  Instead I ate an extra 1/4 cup of almonds and then some water with no calorie lemonade added in.

Then, I had a meal that I didn't like and didn't want to eat.  And since I have 28 days of each meal, I can't really try something else because it would screw me up.  So I decided on a giant salad with a bit of cheese and dressing, and some whole grain crackers. It ended up being fine but sucked slightly because I usually really enjoy the Nutrisystem meals so I felt like I was missing out.

AND THEN.  (The woe is nearly done, I swear.)  I went to a game night.  It was so much fun, I loved it.  However, they had so much delicious food - NACHO BAR ZOMG.  I ate before I went so I wasn't hungry, but the social aspect of it was kind of weird.  Everyone was eating but me and I didn't know most of the people so I felt weird being all, "I'm on a diet and stuff" because I didn't want to make people feel bad for enjoying food.  Which I'm sure they couldn't care less what I ate or didn't, but I'm neurotic.  I should have brought something with me, because everything Nutrisystem is totally portable.  Maybe next time, unless they were freaked out by the bedroom eyes I kept giving their bowls of nachos and decide that I am never invited again, ever.

But!  I found some new foods that I totally love again this week.

Honey Wheat Bagel
Slightly sweet and really, really good.
Definitely doesn't taste like "diet food."

Chicken Tacos
For some reason I thought these would be Meh.
Nope.  I was sad that I didn't have three!

Broccoli & Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breasts
I told Mark that I felt like I was eating at a nice restaurant.  SO GOOD.
I served it the same as this pic - brown rice and zucchini with Italian seasoning.

I am so excited to start month 2.  I am hoping to lose at least 8 pounds, but I think at this point of any diet there will be a plateau.  I have been really lucky so far though!  Plus I think I am ready to exercise again so that will help.  I'm still loving the Nutrisystem plan!

Nutrisystem Week 3: I'm siiiiiiiick.

Not sick of Nutrisystem.  Sick, like, cold sick.  Our whole house is sick which means that in addition to being sick, I can't take my kids anywhere to play while I watch while sitting and sipping a beverage.

But!  I did lose a pound this week and so I am happy about that at least.  Maybe it would have been more because I feel like I'm storing at least a pound of something really gross inside of my sinuses.

Week 1: -2.4
Week 2: -3.8
Week 3: -1

Total so far: 7.2 pounds lost.  And that's a decent amount for a 5'1" little shortie like me!

In general, everyone is really supportive of me using Nutrisystem to lose weight.  There seems to be an overarching attitude of, "what will you do when you get back to real life?"

I see why people say that, I guess, but really?  This IS real life!  I've been eating giant portions of whatever I want when ever I want for the past two years.  I need to get it under control and I am clearly not capable of doing it without assistance because if I was, I would have by now.  I can 100% guarantee that I would have restricted my portions for two weeks, lost 1 pound total, and then would be completely frustrated.  And then I'd eat whatever.  A lot of whatever.  Because I'm never going to lose this weight and blah blah blah woe annoying the end.

That's just me.  Maybe you are different or maybe you like a different method of weight loss or eating or whatever.  Good.  Do what works for you.  Nutrisystem is working for me and I love it!  Any weight loss plan requires some behavior changes so that you don't gain weight back.  The success I've had so far is definitely motivating me to make changes in my eating habits long term!

Today for lunch I ate Vegetable Beef Soup with seven whole grain crackers as my Smart Carb snack.  The soup was delicious and I ate it all and then started on the crackers.  I ate four of them and thought, "I'm full."  I even mentioned it to Mark, because the usual for me would be to eat a giant bowl of soup and a bunch of crackers and then feel stuffed after.  It would have never occurred to me that a small cup would be plenty to make me full.

Vegetable Beef Stew
YUM!
And, since I have gotten a few emails from people who are new to Nutrisystem, I'll post my newest favorite food find!  I was so excited to get my March pantry order so that I could try the new things I ordered.  I tried the Chocolate Chip Scone for the first time today and it was a total WIN!!!!

I keep track of the foods I like in my Daily Planner, which is provided as part of your plan.  You can use it to track every meal and snack, as well as your weight, exercise, water, and veggies.  And it has a reorder reminder page when it is time to pick your next pantry order.  I love filling it out each day because it is just like marking off items on a To Do list, which makes me all hot and bothered.  I love lists more than is normal.  I also use it to rate each food item by a very fancy scale:

No: Not a fan, do not reorder!
Meh: It was fine.
YUM!!!: Reorder for sure!

This is my Nutrisystem Daily Planner

So anyway, the Chocolate Chip Scone got a YUM rating from me this week.  I will definitely order a few in April!

I must confess that, again, I suck at drinking water and getting all 4 veggie servings daily.  Exercise is out because of my ongoing drama post-nobigdeal-surgery.  My incision reopened and there is seriously a gaping wound on my back that needs to heal (which is also supposedly no big deal and I'm trying not to think about it all the time because, you guys?  It looks SoGrossOMG.).  No exercise for me and I am going to stop whining about it and just get over it.

I can't believe I'm almost done with the first of my four months!  I'm planning a vacation for August and I'm hopeful that I won't strike anyone blind at the beach.  Fingers crossed.

Nutrisystem Nation Week 2: Better than the first!

Week two of Nutrisystem has been better than week one and I will totally admit that I can't believe it.  I'm just feeling so encouraged that I can lose the weight I'd like to lose without being miserable.

This was Olivia's birthday week and I was nervous about all of the yumminess I would encounter and possibly want to shove into my face.  Cupcakes, chocolates, ice cream...nervous.  I somehow made it through the week, including two parties, without cheating at all.

And really I wasn't tempted at all.  I think that there is something to the whole Dessert Every Night thing.  Not going to lie - I look forward to my dessert every day but I always feel like I'm getting a treat at the end of the day and so I don't feel bad passing on cupcakes or ice cream.

On the last post, someone asked what foods I did and didn't like.  Let me tell you!  My favorites so far have been these foods:

Breakfast:
Harvest Nut Bar
Banana Nut Muffin
Chocolate Donut (I could eat this every day!)
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
Breakfast Burrito
Cinnamon Roll (the frozen one, so delicious.)

Chocolate Frosted Donut
My favorite food item so far.

Lunch:
Peanut Butter & Jelly Bar
Fettuccine Bar
Double Chocolate Caramel Bar
Chicken Noodle Soup
Margherita Pizza (I could eat this every day, too!)

Margherita Pizza
Looks exactly like this cooked, too.
I add spinach to get a serving of veggies.

Dinner:
Chicken Tortilla Soup
Lasagna with Meat
Roast Beef and Gravy with Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Beef and Wedged Potatoes
Beef, Cheese, and Bean Burrito
Mac and Cheese with Beef
Vegetable Fajita Mix (SO YUM)

Mac & Cheese with Beef
This one surprised me by being delicious.

Dessert (Could eat any of these every day!):
Peppermint Cookie Pattie
Fudge Brownie
White Chocolate Chunk Cookies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate Nougat Bar
Thin Mint Crisp Bar
Ice Cream Sandwich

Thin Mint Crisp Bar
Because it is GS Cookie season!
Requested 5 of these in my March food order.

There are things I don't like, which is inevitable when eating the Nutrisystem food for every meal every day.  Mostly it was because of texture.  I still ate them but won't order them again.  They were:  Loaded Mashed Potatoes (texture), Chicken and Dumplings (texture), Mushroom Risotto (too spicy for me), and Wedding Soup (texture).  I'm sure those things fall on the favorites list of other people and are worth a try!  They are pretty highly rated by other members, but they just weren't for me.  I've been eating Nutrisystem four times a day for two weeks, and out of 56 meals I didn't like four things.  I'm surprised by how much I really do like the food.

Successes:
- Lost another 3.8 pounds this week!  Crazy!  I'm down 6.4 so far in two weeks.  When I lose 10 pounds I get my first Nutribear - a little bear that you get from Nutrisystem to celebrate each 10 pound loss.  I would be so excited to lose 10 pounds in February!

- This weight is the lowest I've been since I had Ainsley and Evelyn in December 2010.

- I had a job interview and no suit to wear.  Or, no suit to wear except one that made me look like a nicely accessorized sausage.  So I bought a suit to wear a few weeks ago and it was snug but fit.  Then this week I went back to the same store and they had a dress to match the jacket and pants I bought before, and I was able to buy one size smaller.  I have no idea if the dress just fit different or whatever but I'm going to just go ahead and be happy about it.

(I'm not in the running for the job, by the way.  It would've been a career change for me and it didn't work out.  But at least it was interviewing experience because I haven't interviewed for jobs in about 10 years.)

(God...10 years?  I'm OLD.)

Confessions:
- I was a mess this week.  Didn't drink all of my water or eat all of my snacks and didn't exercise at all because the incision on my back still hurts for my surgery last week.  Boo.  I hate taking a break from exercise because I will no doubt have super sore muscles to deal with.  And nobody is surprised to hear that I am a complete baby about sore muscles, right?

If you have any questions about Nutrisystem, please email me or leave it in the comments.  I still have a few questions to answer from last week but Olivia's birthday took up all my extra time this week.

Nintendo, it's for breakfast now!

I used to have a tiny little bump in my back that felt like a marble.  A doctor told me it was a fatty tumor and was no big deal.  And it wasn't until recently when it became so huge that it started to hurt and keep me up at night and could be seen sticking out of my back.  So then the doctor told me it had to be removed.

When I was in middle school I was part of this medical explorer group.  I don't know why, maybe I was entertaining ideas of being a doctor or something?  Maybe I wanted to get out of school.  I can't remember.  But I watched an open heart surgery and watched gross videos of medical procedures and thought they were super cool and did not suffer from near barfarooney at all.

Now that I am an old lady with a big lump in her back, I have turned into a giant baby.  The doctor was explaining the incision to me (ew) and how they will cut it out (gross) and how, if it was big enough, they may have to pack the area...(gag from the depths of my soul, omg).  I had to ask her to stop before I harfed.  Such a baby.  She assured me that the whole thing was  no big deal.

And then, the night before this no big deal surgery I couldn't sleep and when I did I had weird stress dreams.  Like, I got a job and Mitt Romney was my boss.  Or that they removed it and it was full of hair and teeth and turns out I ate my twin in utero which I'm pretty sure I saw on Grey's Anatomy a few years ago so it must be totally a real thing that will happen to me.  And when I woke up I had an 80's (90's?) commercial for Nintendo cereal stuck in my head.  "Nin-ten-do, it's for breakfast now!  Nin-ten-do, it's a cereal, wow!"  All day.  And that was the only part I knew so I just kept Rain Man repeating it to myself over and over.

(You can find anything on YouTube, I swear.  Here is the commercial that burst forth from the vaults of my damaged brain.)

(Also, if you are thinking of trying to buy some of this 20 year old cereal, be prepared to pony up at least $200. )

So after my surgery my incision was covered up and the doctor told Mark it was Pretty Big.  They sent the giant wad of fat and skin and other unknown grossness to pathology, although it is most likely just a cyst so I'm not trying to lead up to any kind of drama or anything.  Two days later when I could remove the dressing I was greeted with this beaut:

My promising career as a back model:
RUINED!

And since nobody wants to hear you complain less then your kids, Olivia wanted me to acknowledge her horrible boo boo, here it is for your pity party participation:

Her feet look jacked, too.
Needs manicure at age 3.97
A fun discovery after this minor surgery is that Vicodin makes me want to barf and then pass out and then just kill me OMG.  I spent a good amount of time laying on the floor whimpering.  It was pathetic.  I think I even said, "this is worse than my c-sections."  I'm a joy to be with.

No boo boos to report.
She pretty much claps YAY for everything.
YAY BOO BOO!

I'm feeling pretty OK now though.  It is still sore but I don't need any pain medication.  It turns out that I will likely survive this very minor outpatient surgery after all.  Now I need to stop blaming my recovery for my complete lack of effort in preparing for Olivia's birthday parties on Thursday (at school) and Saturday (at a bounce house) this week.

MY KID IS FOUR THIS WEEK.  Plus there is the situation of this other baby who is crawling and standing and cruising and getting into everything she shouldn't because, hey, that's what babies do.  I found Adelle in the kitchen poking the electrical outlet with her finger in apparent irritation at the childproofing she has to deal with.  Olivia was like, "emergency!  We have a situation here!"

It's rough around here, guys.  And by rough I mean pretty cute and fun despite lack of sleep or ambition to party plan.

Nutrisystem Week 1: YUM and YAY

The thing I hate about sponsored posts is that they may come across as insincere.  I'm not sure if people know how these things work and since I'm doing Nutrisystem for four months and plan to do sixteen update posts, I feel the need to explain.

No sponsored post is forced on a blogger.  You choose to do one or not.  You get money sometimes, or free stuff, in exchange for your opinion.  I don't know how other people do it, but I only say yes to things I think I will like.  I've gotten comments on my review posts in the past that suggested that I've been falsely positive in my review of something.  Not true!  And I've never, ever been pressured to say anything I didn't want to say - the opinions are truly mine.

Now what I'm leading to is a crazy positive review of my first week of Nutrisystem.  Which I am getting for free in exchange for blogging my experience as part of their Nutrisystem Nation Blogger Program.

So anyway, my first week of Nutrisystem has been completely and totally fantastic!  I was, admittedly, very overwhelmed when my first order of food arrived.  It was a lot of food and I had no idea where to put it or what to start with!

Giant box of pantry food!!!!

You get the whole month at once so it definitely requires some shelf shuffling.  My method of organization was to divide by meal, and then choose the first week from each category to keep in the pantry.  The rest is all sorted out and in a box in our spare bedroom.  You also get frozen food, which I sorted by meal in the freezer so I could quickly grab whatever I wanted.  It is easy because each type of meal is labeled and color coded and so you can keep track of what you have left.

The food is really, really good.  Day one, I saw what I was going to eat and thought, "this is tiny.  I am going to be starving."  NO.  I am full all the time and have to remind myself to eat snacks between meals.   You eat all the time - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, dessert.  Unlimited non starchy veggies.

Week 1 on the books and I am IN LOVE with Nutrisystem!!!  I am full and the food is good so I don't feel deprived at all.  I haven't felt jealous of Mark's dinner at all which was a big worry of mine.  One night, I tried to coordinate so that we would all have the same thing to eat - pizza.  Mark and Olivia made their own pizzas with store-bought crusts, and I ate my Nutrisystem pizza.  It was perfect!  My pizza was smaller than theirs by almost half.  When I was finished I was perfectly full and satisfied.  I know that I would have eaten the bigger portion if I had it in front of me.  A big part of this program will be opening my eyes to realistic portions and the feeling of being satisfied and not stuffed full.

My first official day was February 1 and so my one week date would actually be tomorrow.  But I have a minor surgery today and need to fast for most of the day before that, so I am going to share my weigh-in and week one post today:

Week one on Nutrisystem: - 2.4 POUNDS!!!!

(I'm not going to post my weight here.  Every person has a weight that is good for them, and I don't want to say how horrible I feel at my current weight because maybe someone weighs that same weight and looks and feels great.  I've been in that position before, and I wouldn't want to do that to someone else.)

Successes:

1. Lost 2.4 pounds, obviously.

2. Discovered some favorite foods that I will reorder and some not favorites that I won't.

3. No cheating at all.  Not even tempted to cheat - this is big for me.   I am an emotional eater and this week was stressful.  I am so encouraged by this!!

4. By day three I understood completely what I was supposed to eat and had a really easy time planning out my day without constantly checking my reference material.

5. Realized that I was eating way way way too large portions of...everything.  At every meal.  I am full on a normal portion of food.

Confessions:

1. This week has been absolutely nuts for us.  There were so many things going on (non sleeping baby, broken furnace, social calendar, etc.) that I did not get to do my 30 minutes of exercise every day.  I did two, one hour workouts so I figure that equals four, half hour workouts.  I need to be better about this for sure!  I've been working out since before Christmas and have started to notice a difference - I cannot get out of the groove!

2. I missed snacks a few of the days because I was busy and forgot to eat them.  I know that is a bad idea. I'm thinking of setting a phone alarm reminder.  I'm scanning and tracking all of my foods and I was still above 1200 calories so I don't think I hurt myself at all, but I don't want to get in the habit of skipping healthy snacks.

3.  I also did not drink all of my water requirement every day for similar reasons.  I'm supposed to drink 64 ounces a day and 3 days I just couldn't do it.

One week down, fifteen more to go!  Hoping to lose a total of 20-25 pounds.  If you have any questions about Nutrisystem, feel free to email me!

My #1 Tip For New Moms: Master The Swaddle!

The first couple of weeks after your baby is born, she is a delicious-smelling adorable little bundle of sleepiness.  You go around telling people, "oh, she is such a good baby!  She never cries unless she is hungry!  Must be because we have such gentle temperaments and stellar genes!  Best.parents.ever!"
Sleepy newborn goodness.
It isn't your gestation skills.
Being born is exhausting.
And then?  She turns, like, three or four weeks old.  And suddenly she is a delicious-smelling adorable bundle of intermittent screaming and pooping and you are all, "my genes are tainted and my temperament is obviously flawed and woe! Copious amounts of woe!"
Please, go on about how you had a calm baby
because you are a calm person.
LOL FOREVER
I've had the pleasure of nurturing three adorable yet stubborn bundles of joy, and the key to calming all of them was a perfectly executed swaddle.  I am a swaddle master at this point.  I swaddled by reflux grouch, my trach/vent dependent drama queen, and my colicky scream queen.
Sure, there are lots of useful tips for new moms.  People love to cram "useful" tips down your throat in the final weeks of lugging around your watermelon uterus.  (Sleep when the baby sleeps!  Worst.advice.ever.)
My favorite thing to cram down the new mom throat is this:  Master the art of the swaddle.
Take care of every need that you can think of: feed that baby!  Diaper that baby!  Burp and give that baby some gas drops!  If you are new to using gas drops, you should try St. Joseph Infants' Gas Relief drops.  They help to break down gas bubbles that add to the cryfest extravaganza, and you can use them at every feeding. Once you feel confident that you've done all that you can do to make your baby happy, then wrap that little glob of nomable fatness up as tight as you can.
Now.  I know that swaddling can be hard, especially if you gestate tiny little swaddle ninjas.  All of my babies have been little escape artists who could undo the most magnificent swaddle using magic and sheer will to scream.  If the traditional swaddle doesn't work for you because you give birth to swaddle escape ninjas, there are a bunch of swaddle blankets out there.
Here are my top three tips for a good swaddle:
1. Make sure that your baby's arms are straight when you start the swaddle.
You want the blanket to be tightly wrapped!  If the baby can wiggle those arms, the baby can get out of the swaddle, and the baby will scream, and then there is a good chance that you will scream too.  You will feel like you are being mean as your baby screams and wiggles and fights the swaddle but DO NOT GIVE UP.  Your baby craves the security of the swaddle as much as you crave the silence of a calm baby.
2. Legs in or legs out - it doesn't matter!
If your swaddle ninja appears to use her legs to push the swaddle off, leave her legs unwrapped.  The arms matter the most because of the super fun startle reflex that takes your baby from peacefully sleeping to scared out of their mind screaming.
3. Don't let temperature freak you out.
Usually, overheating isn't a concern in the winter since it is chilly anyway.  But in the summer, you may worry that your baby will overheat.  If you need to, swaddle your baby in only a diaper to keep her cool.  Or you can swaddle with a lightweight blanket.  I used muslin swaddling blankets for my summer baby and she was always cool and comfortable, even when it was hotter than hades outside.
